Valparaíso, Chile, a mountainous port city about an hour and a half outside of Santiago, stacks up a rainbow of houses and serves fresh-grilled sea fare for camera-ready climbers, eager to hike the steep paths for a spectacular visual payoff.  Already famed for it’s visual viv, the city boosted it auditory offerings last week by opening its first ever music library, the “Biblioteca Musical of Valparaíso.”

The library, located at the Matilde Brandau School on 1901 Avda Brasil, welcomes all, whether musical or not, to tune into new sounds and broaden their musical knowledge.

Mayor Jorge Castro and the manager of the municipal corporation of Valparaíso (Cormuval) Gustavo Mortara worked alongside the frontman of the project and director of the Cormuval Orchestra, Frencisco Villalobos.

They specifically encourage professors to explore their musical resources. Villalobos said, “This library has materials like DVD’s, CDs, books and famous Chilean sheet music. Moreover, the materials are designed to promote learning.”

Representatives from the library will visit schools and colleges to spread the word about the library’s opening, and teach them how to incorporate the town’s new musical resources into the classroom.

Students studying at one of the many nearby music schools in Chile's capital city like the Academia De Musica Y Canto Diazort, Academia Dario Rojas, Projazz, or Academia de Musica Alhambra have only a short scenic drive to access the library.

The mayor said:

“We are very pleased about the project that allows us to open our musical horizons and learn about all classes of music, whether through books, music or audiovisual material. Moreover, I’d like to thank the business and individuals for their donations and leave the door open to others who would like contribute or add music works to this library.”

We have a plan to spread the word of the provinces to the world. The number of stories published outside of Chile highlighting the rich culture and diversity of the regions are few and far between. By writing in English, we aim to change that. We strive to foster a deeper cultural understanding for English speakers in Chile and offer more content to English-speaking Chileans.

If you know a local story that could have a broader impact, please email me ([email protected]), tweet me (@Katie_Manning), or just comment below. I’d be excited to write your stories in English.
